Details
Description:
Silver coin from Abdul Majiod, the Ottoman Caliph who ascended the throne in 1839 AD (1255 AH). He ruled the Muslim empire in the period 1255-1277 AH (1839-1861 AD). This is a 10 Para coin or one fourth of a Qirsh or piastre. This silver coin indicates that it was struck in Abdul Majid's 12th year after ascending the throne which translates to 1849. It depicts Abdul Majid's toughra on the obverse with the denomination below it and a rose to the right. The reverse shows the mint (Misr), the year 1255 and the number 12 over the "beh" in the word Duribah. Small silver coins with low denomination and in good condition such as this are rare due to the fact that they have been used extensively and/or melted for the precious metal. Please carefully review the scan presented as it is part and parcel of our description.
Date:
This coin was struck in Abdul Majid's 12th reignal year or 1849.
Mint:
Misr or Fustat on the outskirts of Cairo the current capital of Egypt.
Size and weight:
This is a 10 para, weighs about 0.4 grams of 83.3% silver and is ~14 mm in diameter.
References:
It is KM #225.
Condition:
I would grade this coin as good uncirculated with some toning and residual mint luster. Krause Standard Catalog of World Coins has no price for uncirculated specimens since these are rather rare. The coin has curvature to the flan as opposed to being completely flat but this is original to the making of the coin. The coin has no observable wear commensurate with its uncirculated state. It also has some bag marks and scratches, which do not distract from its beauty and quality. The coin itself is much better than the scan shows with very well defined and legible calligraphy. A definite quality coin. Please see the scan presented for additional condition information.
