The .500 fine silver 25-piso coin commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of General Douglas MacArthur, the liberator of the Philippines during World War II. The obverse of the coin bears a superbly sculptured portrait of the great American solder-statesman, and bears the inscription Ikasandaang Taong Kaarawan (100th Anniversary). The reverse depicts General MacArthur's historic wartime return to the Philippines and bears the inscription Leyte Landing October 20, 1944, the legend Republika ng Pilipinas, and the denomination. This coin design was issued only in 1980
- The five-piso coin pays tribute to Ferdinand Marcos, the kleptocrat President of the Philippines
- The great patriot Jose Rizal is depicted on the one-piso coin
- The first Philippine painter to win international fame, Juan Luna, is featured on the twenty-five-sentimo coin
- Another national leader, Francisco Baltasar, is commemorated on the ten-sentimo coin
- Melchora Aquino, known as the "mother of the revolution," is honored on the five-sentimo coin, minted with a scalloped edge
- Square with rounded corners, the one-sentimo coin portrays the warrior chieftain Lapulapu who led the resistance to Spanish conquest in the 16th century
- The seal of the Republic of the Philippines appears on the reverses of the five and one-piso coins. The reverse of the four smallest denomination coins carry the seal of the Central Bank of the Philippines, symbolizing the nation's economic development
- Certificate of Authenticity to certify that the set is legal tender and is an original 1980 Proof Set minted by the Franklin Mint under authorization of the government of the Philippines
